Sailing All the Way to Halkidiki

Updated: Aug 21, 2019

Our group trip this week began with a one and a half hour bus ride from the school to the port of Nikiti with snack stop along the way. Once we made it to Nikiti, we met our boat crew before we began sailing towards Halkidiki. Halkidiki is in the Aegean Sea and has three peninsulas: Kassandra, Sithonia, and Agion Oros. Since Agion Oros has many monasteries, the whole peninsula is restricted to men. Therefore, we stayed close to Kassandra and Sithonia to visited three different beaches and coves.

After spending the whole day out on the water, we arrive back at the port to have dinner at ELΛDIΛ. It is a restaurant and store owned by a professor at the American Farm School. This meal was family style meaning multiple dishes of the same thing are served among your group to be passed and shared. This is very popular in Greece and the majority of our meals at restaurants have been served this way. Our meal is shown below. :)

  • First picture: a Greek salad with goat cheese instead of the typical feta

  • Second picture: Cold pasta salad with Tzatziki

  • Third picture: Manouri. It is a type of cheese that is very similar to cream cheese and is creamier than feta

  • Fourth picture: Eggplant salad on pita

  • Fifth picture: Plater of different meats including buffalo burgers, pork and cheese sausages, and beef patties with tortillas

  • Sixth Picture: Cheesecake with cherry topping

Following dinner, we were shown the products within the store which included olive oil, pasta, cheeses, honey, salsa, spices, spreads and ouzo, which is a type of alcohol that tastes like liquid licorice. It is a type of drink that you will try for the experience , but then never again. :)

Fun fact: All of the products within the store are produced in Greece

The containers below the cheese case were containers used for storing cheese. I can't even imagine buying or consuming that much cheese
